Prisoners of the Past

let go of your past

The past has a funny way of creeping up on us. Just when we thought we were free from it’s constraints,  we suddenly find ourselves prisoners of the past once more.

So how do we free ourselves from this unwelcome visitor?  The key is to recognise the patterns in Past’s behaviour.

When does Past come knocking? When does Past knock the loudest? When is Past’s presence so insistent that he imposes on your present day peace and happiness?

You may not be able to prevent Past from visiting, but you CAN be prepared. You might start by politely requesting he move on. If he is insistent, tell him to fuck off and jog on! You have a right to close the door on Past, just as you have the freedom to open the door to Present and Future.

The truth is, Past will always come knocking, and often unexpectedly. But YOU have the power to choose what to do when he does.

Be not a prisoner of your own home. Free yourself.

‘Stand up and walk out of your history.’

Just Bloom

Just bloom

The truth is, there will always be someone else who is perceived as smarter, prettier, taller, slimmer, wittier or more creative than you; just as you will always be perceived as smarter, prettier, taller, slimmer, wittier or more creative than someone else… But non of that even matters. What matters is that you stop comparing yourself to others and recognise your own worth. For you are completely lovable exactly as you are.

Do you believe that the same Divine wisdom that created the birds, the flowers and the trees forgot to create you in the same way? With unique purpose and beauty and love?

You are uniquely YOU. A Divine being. Love every ounce of yourself because there is no other quite like you.

As I Began To Love Myself

AS I BEGAN TO LOVE MYSELF by Charlie Chaplin

As I began to love myself I found that anguish and emotional suffering are only warning signs that I was living against my own truth.

Today, I know this is “AUTHENTICITY”.

As I began to love myself I understood how much it can offend somebody. As I try to force my desires on this person, even though I knew the time was not right and the person was not ready for it, and even though this person was me.

Today I call it “RESPECT”.

As I began to love myself I stopped craving for a different life and I could see that everything that surrounded me was inviting me to grow.

Today I call it “MATURITY”.

As I began to love myself I understood that at any circumstance, I am in the right place at the right time, and everything happens at exactly the right moment. So I could be calm.

Today I call it “SELF-CONFIDENCE”.

As I began to love myself I quit steeling my own time and stopped designing huge projects for the future.

Today, I only do what brings me joy and happiness, things I love to do and that make my heart cheer, and I do them in my own way and in my own rhythm.

Today I call it “SIMPLICITY”.

As I began to love myself I freed myself of anything that is no good for my health – food, people, things, situations, and everything that drew me down and away from myself. At first I called this attitude a healthy egoism.

Today I know it is “LOVE OF ONESELF”.

As I began to love myself I quit trying to always be right, and ever since, I was wrong less of the time.

Today I discovered that is “MODESTY”.

As I began to love myself I refused to go on living in the past and worrying about the future. Now, I only live for the moment, where EVERYTHING is happening.

Today I live each day, day by day, and I call it “FULFILLMENT”.

As I began to love myself I recognized that my mind can disturb me and it can make me sick. But as I connected it to my heart, my mind became a valuable ally.

Today I call this connection “WISDOM OF THE HEART”.

We no longer need to fear arguments, confrontations or any kind of problems with ourselves or others. Even stars collide, and out of their crashing, new worlds are born. Today I know that is “LIFE”!
Wise words by Mr Chaplin…

Soulful Sunday #35: Honour Yourself

Honour Yourself

Welcome to my thirty-fifth instalment of ‘Soulful Sundays’. A weekly share where I post a roundup of soulful reflections, each including recipes, songs, quotes, blogs I have read and/or any other inspirational discoveries to sooth the soul.

For me, Sunday’s have become a day of quiet contemplation and simple pleasures. A time to reflect on the week gone by and to consider my hopes and dreams for the week ahead.

My hope is to extend some love outward and to share some simple pleasures with anyone who cares to receive them.

Soul Reflections

There are days when our hearts are so over-joyed we feel we could walk on air we’re so high… And then there are days when we want to punch pillows and hide under duvets in a darkened room. Life’s contrasts are real. But we needn’t hide or run from them. We just need to live them. And be kind to ourselves in the process.

Whether you are high on life today, or having a duvet day (like me) because your lady cramps are in full force and the sight of puppies causes you to cry into your rice crispies – whatever your mood may be, honour yourself. Do what makes your soul happy (or at least do what makes you feel sane!) Take yourself off for a walk. Watch back to back episodes of Friends and laugh untill your belly hurts. Create a delicious, nourishing meal that heals, or devour some crumpets with drippings and drippings of butter!

Whatever you decide to do, do it with complete love for yourself. Honour your feelings, and trust that everything will be just fine.

Soul Strolls

I have the honour of house sitting for my friends again, taking care of their beautiful cat, Bella, whilst they are away on holiday. Their home is ten minutes from Princes Park, so I have been lucky enough to enjoy some daily soul strolls again this week. There is nothing like a walk to wash away your woes. I took this photo on the first day of Spring here in Melbourne, Australia.

Since ancient times, the first of September has been viewed as a time for reflection and renewal. As the seasons gently give way to one another, may we be gentle on ourselves. The seasonal transition is synonymous with our own growth and regeneration, so let us be kind as we reflect, blossom and bloom into all that we were meant to be.

Soul Food

Tomorrow, I’ve decided to make my Amaranth & Seed Superfood slices, it’s been a while since I’ve made them. They are such a delicious little snack to keep on hand for those moments when you need a little pick me up without the added nasties that can sometimes be hidden in so called pre-packaged ‘health’ bars. What’s your favourite little go-to snack?

Soul Music

I’d like to share a meditation track today titled, Love Song From The Mountains by Deuter. It is truly mesmerising, the perfect song to honour yourself with in a moment of tranquil bliss. Take a moment to close your eyes and become lost in it’s heavenly sounds.

Soul Sisters

Today I would like to share the post How To Recognise An Incredible Woman.

I discovered it on My Own Private Idaho. Head on over for a read! I’m sure we can all identify with the woman in this beautiful, honest piece.

Wishing you all a peaceful Sunday of love and self-honouring my friends.

Alone Time

alone time

Just as time spent with friends and loved ones is essential for a happy existence, so is time spent alone.

Honouring our alone time is essential for balance and renewal. During these stolen moments of solitude we reconnect with ourselves; our deepest dreams, wishes, hopes and desires. Taking a break from the world doesn’t mean that we care any less for our friends and family, it simply means that we love them enough to take care of ourselves first. We cannot give away what we don’t have. If we are depleted, out of touch with ourselves, tired and run down – how can we give the best of ourselves to others?

Today, take a guilt free moment of peace.

‘Compassion is not complete if it does not include oneself.’
– Allan Lokos.

Know that in serving you first, you can better serve the world. When you take the time to connect with who you are; your truest, essential nature – the love and compassion your show for yourself will ultimately bless those you come into contact with.

In love & light,

Self-care Is Essential.

self-care
It can be difficult to say ‘no’ at times, but learning to nourish and replenish yourself can be the difference between giving others the best of you as opposed to the rest of you. If we don’t take time to rejuvenate from time to time, we will have nothing left to offer. We cannot give from an empty cup. Today I am bringing you a gentle reminder to show yourself some self-care and compassion. If your well has run dry, now is the time to fill it. It isn’t selfish, it is essential.

You may want to run yourself a hot bath with some scented oils and candles, or give yourself permission to put your feet up and read a great book. Why not watch your favourite comedy in your pyjamas and give yourself the gift of laughter? Go for a sunset stroll and breathe some fresh air into your lungs – nature has healing qualities. Maybe you could cook a delicious dinner and pour yourself a glass of wine or a hot mug of tea? Whatever you decide to do, know that when you listen to your body’s needs and treat yourself with love and kindness, you will have much more to give. You are no use to anyone stressed, tired and grumpy.

Today, say ‘yes’ to you. Fill your cup first so it can over-spill and flow to others. Your friends and family will thank you for it.

In love and light,

Hayley xx

Never Too Late

its-never-too-late-to-be-who-you-might-have-been-copy
Stop for a moment. Are you living the life you imagined? Or do you daydream of the things you just ‘never got around to doing’?

Maybe you always wanted to learn the piano? Or to dance the Tango? Have you always wanted to travel to Paris or learn to speak French? Maybe you admire women who dare to cut their hair short, yet wear yours long and say “I’d never pull it off anyway…” Have you dreamt of owning a pair of red stiletto heals, yet play it safe with ‘practical’ comfy loafers instead? How many of us look in the mirror and no longer recognise the person staring back at us?

Whatever our wishes and dreams may be, let us not ignore the whispers of our authentic selves any longer. Throw caution to the wind. We may have neglected who we are up until now, but ‘it’s never too late to be who you might have been.’

In Love and Light (and red stilettos) 👠😉

Soulful Sundays #10: Self Acceptance

when-i-accept-myself-i-am-freed-from-the-burden-of-needing-you-to-accept-me

Welcome to my tenth instalment of ‘Soulful Sundays’.

We have all been there, trapped by feelings of inadequacy and low self-worth. Maybe we’ve been triggered by a comment, or the actions of another, and within moments we find ourselves caught in a land slide of unworthiness and negative self-talk: “What’s the use?…I’m no good at this…she’s far more capable/prettier/skinnier than I am.” Suddenly, we are caught in the dreaded comparison trap. We have forgotten who we are. We have forgotten our innate beauty and unique value upon this spinning axis of life.  It is during these times we must be gentle with ourselves. And most of all, stop looking for outside approval and validity. At our core we are pure love and light. Our presence and contribution on this earth are as significant as the air we breath.

So be kind to yourself. If it helps, write down 5 things you love about yourself. If that seems too difficult in the moment, you may want to begin by listing five things you have done that you are proud of, however great or small that may seem. This simple act can quickly remind us just how amazing we truly are. We are ALL deserving of love. And that love begins first, with you.

Soul Strolls

Last weekend we were holidaying in the Sunshine Coast for my partner’s 30th birthday. Whilst my English skin got a little burnt despite my best efforts not too, we had some wonderful strolls along the beach. It was lovely to get away and spend some time by the ocean and breath in some salty sea air.

Soul Sounds

On Friday we watched Coldplay live at the Etihad Stadium in Melbourne. I have loved Coldplay since their first album, Parachutes and have been a massive fan ever since. My Dad and I used to listen to Coldplay often, so they hold an extra special place in my heart. From their flawless vocals, magical lighting effects,  evocative lyrics and humbling interaction with the crowd, Coldplay left us with a Head Full of Dreams and a heart full of love. WordPress wont allow me to upload my own video, so I have included the official Head Full of Dreams video, which aptly portrays the mesmorising live atmosphere we experienced, along with a photo I snapped on the night.

Soul Food

I love healthy alternatives to popular puddings, so today I am sharing this Pumpkin Cashew Cream Cake  which I discovered on one of my favourite health and wellness websites, KrissCarr.com. With Christmas around the corner, I’m all about sharing tasty recipes that wont leave us collapsed in a sugar induced food coma for hours! Be sure to let me know if you try this one out.

It Begins With You

oscar-wilde-love-oneself-life-long-romance

We often hear of the importance of loving oneself. However, for many of us, this is easier said than done. We fret over our appearance, compare our progress with those around us and berate ourselves when we don’t ‘get it right’. What is it that prevents us from showing ourselves the loving care and kindness we so deserve? We continue to exhaust our very souls in our attempts to please and meet the needs of everyone else, yet when it comes to ourselves – we just ‘don’t have the time’.

I am a big believer that we cannot fill the cup of another if our own cups are running on empty. We may be able to sustain this for a short while, but it wont be long before we become stressed, depleted and desperately out of touch with ourselves. It is vital that we take the time to do what makes our soul happy. But for many of us, we have forgotten what that even looks like. “Take time out?” we scoff. “I don’t have time for that…I need to take the kids to school/prepare the lunches/take care of my sick mother/earn a living…who will attend to all of these things if not me?” I hear this everyday from women. I’ve been that woman too – so caught up in the Doing that I totally neglect just Being. It saddens my soul to think that we are a nation that prides ourselves on how much we can get ‘done’, and at the expense of our health and our livelihood.

If we continue to ignore our own needs, wants and wishes, we will risk becoming unhappy, overwhelmed and stressed with the every day demands of life. Feelings of guilt and resentment are not uncommon for the chronic ‘Doer.’  “I should be doing something….I wish I just had five minutes to myself.” It is no coincidence that those who take time to nurture their souls and do the things they love lead less harried lives. It is not that they have more time or any less to do, but that they are able to approach tasks with a renewed sense of joy and energy, because they have carved out time to fill their cups. Only when our cups are full can they overspill to those we love. This isn’t selfish, it is essential.

So next time you are feeling anxious or overwhelmed, stressed out, run down or completely frazzled with by the long list of ‘To Do’s’ requiring your attention, ask yourself this: “Have I attended to the most important thing on that list? – my Self. Have I done something today that makes my soul happy?”

We cannot giveaway what we do not have. So love yourself. Be kind and gentle with yourself. Romance yourself. Know that you deserve to fill your cup every single day of your life. And that in doing so, you can bestow your loving gifts upon the world with a renewed sense of peace and joy in your heart.

In love and light,

Hayley xx
